Title Ο αρατικός λόγος στο Σοφοκλή
Alternative Title Curses in Sophocles
Author Σκεπετζάκη, Ελένη
Thesis advisor Καβουλάκη Αθηνά
Abstract This thesis attempts a comprehensive approach on the curses found in the extant tragedies of Sophocles. A curse is defined, among other things, as a malicious wish, usually expressing the desire for something bad to happen to someone or something. This definition seems to be covered by the broader term "ἀρά" in the Ancient Greek sources. Curses form a type of human interaction with the gods, in terms of divine reciprocity. They turn up in poetry as early as the Homeric poems, while they seem to ‘flourish’ in the classical period through tragedy and the tragedians. On stage, curses are used by the poet –Sophocles in this case– as a means of forming a hero’s ethos, as well as marking the change of their social identity as we know it, while ‘cursing’ is presented as the ultimate solution for those in need, who are incapable of handling unjust occurrences and negative emotions. The Introduction of this thesis presents the emerging terminology issues related to curses, as well as the subcategories curses are divided into and the topics that seem to recur. Important elements related to the earlier, pre-Sophoclean tradition that also appear in the Sophoclean material are mentioned, too. The First Chapter consists of passages typical of curses in the Homeric poems and an overview of the broader picture prevailing in tragedy. In the Second Chapter, a thorough look at passages of curses in the extant tragedies of Sophocles is being taken, the works grouped by mythic cycle. Τhe Third and last chapter is a summary of what Sophoclean curses are made up of, while the main conclusions are given, as well.
