Abstract Co-teaching is applied to the Greek school in the form of parallel support. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the role of parallel support, in the inclusion of students with special educational needs in the general classroom, as well as to determine the challenges facing the parallel support teacher in the Greek school. The methodology is based on qualitative research, and in particular, on the flexible plan of the multiple case study. Two studies are utilized, each including the general education teacher, the special educational teacher and the student with disabilities. Teacher and parents' interviews, observations within the classroom and the diary of recording activities are used as a data collection. The results of the study show that the parallel support program, as it is applied to the Greek school, has many similarities to the One Teach-One Assist model, as special education teacher supports the student with disabilities (Mavropalias & Anastasiou, 2016). Also, special education teacher is confronted with difficulties, both in the institutional framework of the model and his collaboration with the general education teacher.
