Abstract The idea of “storm and stress” in teenage-hood stems from biological approaches of adolescence as a concept. Even if we accept the fact that teenage-hood is a problematic stage of a person's life that concerns specific social milieus. Even in those milieus experiential researches have questioned this notion of troublesome adolescence as a distinctive element of adolescent’s conduct. Age, as well as other chronological concepts, has been frequently objectified, substantiated , acquires an autonomous existence. However, the effect of biological factors on behavior should be nullified. Age acquires a biological, social and personal significance, becomes a part of personal identity and a part of certain patterns of conduct. By studying various social definitions of childhood, teenagehood and youth, at a series of different historical-social contexts, the overlap and ambiguity of social and age categories becomes evident. Centered around the case of American society were the discovery of “tumultuous” adolescence took place, this study demonstrates that teenage-hood as a social category is carved out by social transformations in industrial societies, changes and redefinitions of social relations in economy, family and education. The advance of science and bureaucracy, bodies that have been assigned to categorize and manage populations, has been crucial to the conceptual formation of this age category to a social one, with specific, and usually troublesome, traits. Ultimately, the traits of teenage-hood depend on social procedures that designate values and rules that govern the relations between adults and children and adjust adult conduct which is the final goal of adolescent's developmental course.
