Abstract

The aim of this study is the presentation and the evaluation of the functional data of two hospitals of the National Health System in Heraklion, the University General Hospital of Heraklion and Venizeleio Pananeio-General Hospital of Heraklion” with the target: a) the improvement of the services provided and b) the efficient utilization of the human and financial resources. Input indicators are used for the achieve of the aim of the study (such as: hospital beds, doctors per bed, nursing staff per bed, etc), outflow indicators (average length of stay in hospital, rate of input, etc) and efficiency indicators (surgical operations per surgeon, number of visits at the outpatient units per doctor, per each clinical department of the two hospital. What can be drawn as a conclusion by this study is: a) the sufficiency of the hospital beds and the conversion of some of those into other forms of healthcare that the population really needs, b) the uneven distribution of the medical and nursing staff, c) the material resources aren’t used efficiently and d) the human resources aren’t utilized effectively. It is essential that policies be applied so as the above issues are confronted, especially with the present economic circumstance which jeopardizes the sustainability of the public health sector.
