Abstract Femtosecond laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) have several applications in surface structuring and functionalization. Their formation mechanism is, though, up to date debatable. The aim of this thesis is to fabricate high-spatial-frequency LIPSS (HSFL) on silicon and metallic surfaces, nickel and molybdenum, by ultrashort laser pulses and to evaluate the dependence of their periodicity with respect to the irradiating pulse energy and effective number of pulses per spot. The HSFL geometrical characteristics are evaluated via Scanning Electron and Atomic Force Microscopies.
