Abstract The topic of this dissertation focuses on the field of disabilities and specifically on the mapping of disability structures that exist in Rethymnon. Its main purpose is to find out through this research how disability is institutionally delimited but also how it is managed by local structures, services and less organized actions, as well as what strategies are developed in the society and especially in a provincial city, in order to address and integrate smoothly and correctly disability and people with it into the social structure. The present work is divided into two parts. One includes the theoretical part, i.e. the bibliographic review that refers to disability issues both globally and nationally. The second part includes the empirical part. This part includes the recording and mapping of all the structures that exist in Rethymnon and which are related to disability issues. as well as the research process that followed. This part is based on a qualitative research, which was conducted through semi-structured interviews with professionals or executives of the structures. These interviews, after being transcribed, later analyzed through the process of thematic analysis. An important part of this work are the findings found through this research work. These findings provided considerable and important evidence, which among other things showed that disability as a word includes both positive and negative attitudes towards its use by professionals, as well as that basically disability is a social construct, as if all were accessible to all without exception, then there would be no reason to distinguish a person on the basis of whether he is disabled or not. Also through this research it was revealed that both mental disabilities and chronic diseases can be seen as part of disabilities and be integrated within the whole concept of the disability movement. It was also stated on the one hand that the structures that exist in Rethymno help a lot in the destigmatization of disability especially compared to the past, and on the other hand the fact that Rethymno is a symbolic city in terms of accessibility it offers to people with disabilities, giving their right to move freely and comfortably throughout the city in which they live or to which they have come on holiday. Equally important is the fact that the structures that exist in Rethymno develop specific policies for the management of disability within the social web and not outside it, as well as the development of relationships and collaborations with other structures (inside and outside the Prefecture, Crete, but also of Greece), as well as with local-state bodies. Finally, something that is worth noting here is the fact that it was observed that there is now a positive attitude of the local community in terms of structures but also in terms of disability in general.
