Abstract The purpose of this research is to study the parallel support program and to examine the professional identity of teachers who implement it. The research carried out through semi structured interviews of seventeen substitute teachers (12 general education teachers and 5 special education teachers) who work or have worked in the program of parallel support in Rethymno. The qualitative findings have shown that the professional identity of substitute teachers who implemented the program of parallel support is affected by the quality of the collaboration between teachers, parents and students, their limited involvement in the classroom, the vague legislation of the program and the precarious employment status of substitute teachers. The research also revealed differences in the ways general and special education teachers implementing the program of parallel support construct their professional identity.
