Abstract Stress is a factor that strongly affects our daily lives. Exposure to stressful conditions has resulted, as evidenced by literature, in a tendency to use legal or other psychotropic substances in order to reduce the intensity of stressful conditions or as a way to deal with them. In particular, in the population of people who exhibit addictive behavior on a substance, it is observed that exposure to stressors is capable of causing the manifestation of craving. The purpose of this research is to investigate whether the presence of stressful stimuli and conditions is associated with the manifestation of intense desires for alcohol among people who are trying to recover from alcohol. The survey follows a mixed methodology. Initially, the aims of the quantitative research are to investigate the relationship between stress and craving and to examine whether gender and coping strategies can moderate the above relationship. Then, the aim of the qualitative research is to investigate the participants' own experience of stress and alcohol cravings during their recovery from alcohol use. The sample of the quantitative survey consists of 50 people, aged 18 and over coming from the programs Alcoholics Anonymous, Methexis and Kethea Alpha. To conduct the research, a self-report questionnaire for demographics, the Perceived Stress Scale, the Impact of Event Scale, Ways of Coping and the OCDS Scale for Craving Measurement Scale were provided. The data were statistically analyzed. In order to conduct the qualitative research, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 5 members of the Alcoholics Anonymous groups. The findings were transcribed, codified and analysed through thematic analysis. Quantitative research revealed a link between stress and alcohol craving, but gender and coping strategies did not moderate this relationship. Qualitative research revealed four main topics with different subtopics related to stress and craving. The research reveals contradictory findings about the relationship between stress and alcohol craving, as statistically there is a relationship, but through the narratives of the participants no clear relationship emerges.
