Abstract	The aim of the present study was to investigate the in vivo effect of erythromycin and cisarpide on Gallbladder motility in ten healthy male sublects as assessed by real time ultrasonography. During the interdigestive period, the intravenous infusion of 200mg lactobionate erythromycin reduced fasting Gallbladder volume by 42per cent. The same dose of erythromycin significantly reduced the lag phase(P<0.04) and increased the extent(P<0.00016) of postprandial Gallbladder emptying. The per OS administration of 10mg cisapride resulted in emptying of the Gallbladder by 44 per cent under fasting condition. In addition, cisapride significantly increased the extent of postprandial Gallbladderemptying(P<0.002). The effect of erythromycin on postprandial Gallbladder emptying was significantly more pronounced than that of cisapride(P<0.005). Such difference was not observed in fasting state. It is speculated that the effects of these gastrokinetic agents on Gallbladder motility are via cholinergic pathways.
