Abstract

The field of ancient aristophanic scholia is traditionally treated by modern and contemporary research either as a source of -often unreliable- historical information or completely contemptuously. It is indicative that, unlike other aspects of aristophanic research, bibliography on aristophanic scholia is meager. However, modern researchers are putting the discussion on a new footing, examining the literary tradition and the ancient sources available to the medieval commentator. The aim of this study is to investigate the way in which ancient and medieval scholiasts treat the lewd aristophanic muse, examining the ancient scholia on Lysistrata, as well as a body of indicative scholia, compiled throughout the aristophanic corpus. Emphasis is placed on those cases in which commentators either "discover" sexual allusions or misinterpret sexual obscenities. At the same time, special mention is made of the onomasti kōmōidein, one of the most important elements of Old Comedy.
