Abstract The steady increase in energy consumption by burning fossil fuels, combined with the environmental pollution has promoted research interest in the exploration of alternative and renewable energy sources. Among the available renewable energy sources, solar energy is the most promising, as sunlight is in abundance. Solar energy can be used to produce hydrogen fuel, which is the energy fuel of the future, providing a solution to the problem of the global energy crisis. Photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) production is an efficient method to convert water into hydrogen fuel. A photocatalytic hydrogen production system consists of the photosensitizer (PS), the catalyst (CAT) and the sacrificial electron donor (SED). The purpose of this bachelor thesis was the synthesis of NCDots-Η2TCPP and NCDots-Zn-TCPP for photocatalytic hydrogen production. Firstly, the porphyrins H2-TCPP and Zn-TCPP were synthesized and fully characterized by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ ionization time of flight (MALDI-TOF-MS). NCDots were synthesized and characterized by ultravioletvisible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), fluorescence spectroscopy and Kaiser Test. The two porphyrins were then coupled with NCDots, and NCDots-Η2TCPP and NCDots-Zn-TCPP were obtained and characterized with UV-Vis spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, Kaiser Test, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and infrared spectroscopy (IR). Finally, photocatalytic hydrogen production experiments were performed with NCDots-Η2TCPP and NCDots-Zn-TCPP as photosensitizers at three different concentrations 20, 50 and 100 nmol of a cobalt catalyst and it was found that the optimal catalyst concentration for NCDots-Η2TCPP and NCDots-ZnTCPP were 20 and 100 nmol respectively.
