Abstract The present thesis is based on creating micropatterned substrates of silicon by ablation via a pulsed fs-laser. The substrates where created by altering two parameters of the experimental setup, the first on is the fluence of the laser beam and the second one is the environment of irradiation. The morphological characterization of the substrates after irradiation showed that by increasing the laser fluence there was an increase of roughness of the micropatterned silicon substrates. The micropatterned substrates comprise ripples and also spikes of different spatial density and height. In more detail, the increase of the laser fluence lead in decrease of spatial density and at the same time in increase of the height of spikes. Furthermore, the different environments of irradiation play a significant role on the morphology of the micropatterned surfaces. In ambient air the structures created where irregular compared to the ones created in vacuum witch showed more order and are higher, the last ones created in reactive gas SF6 are in higher order and also are the highest. In time investigation of the surface wettability was held, in order to see how the wetting properties change throughout time. The study showed that after cleaning the surfaces they were hydrophobic, and after one weak this property changed and they became hydrophilic and stay as such throughout the time contact angle measurements were taken. Finally, we studied the effect of the cleaning procedure to the wettability of the surface. We used two different cleaning methods and from static contact angle measurements we concluded that the cleaning method plays no significant role to the wettability properties of the microstructured surfaces.
