Abstract The main aim of this mixed methods study was to explore parental grief after the death of a child to chronic illness. The support that parents sought or received in correlation with their needs during the period their child was ill and after his/her death was explored. Parents (N=56) of children who had been hospitalized in a public pediatric oncology unit in Athens participated in the study. Fifty six semi-structured interviews were conducted and analyzed using Grounded Theory Methods. The inventories WHOQOL-BREF, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support and Inventory of Complicated Grief were administered. Parents’ experiences during the period the child was hospitalized were found to be related to their grief after the child’s death. Factors that influence their grief were related to the care the child received during hospitalization and the support parents had before and after the child’s death. Parents’ family and social network are essential sources of support in bereavement. Social support was found to improve the quality of life of bereaved parents and to reduce complicated grief. A considerable percentage of the parents who participated in the research, however, suffered complicated grief. None of the parents in the study received formal bereavement support from the hospital where their child had been treated. However, continuity in the provision of support from the medical staff after the child’s death is important to parents. Further research is necessary for the identification of other factors contributing to complicated grief and the identification and evaluation of bereavement follow-up care provided by public pediatric oncology hospitals in Greece.
