Abstract In this study the absorption capacity and photocatalytic efficiency of zeolite and Degussa P25 or synthetic TiO2 as well as their combination for decolorization of methylene blue (MB) were investigated. The studied photocatalytic materials were characterized by the Scanning Electron Microscopy, (SEM), X-Ray Diffraction, (XRD), Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, ATR-FTIR, Raman spectroscopy techniques to verify their structural and morphological characteristics. To study the photocatalytic yield of the photocatalysts, the aqueous solution of the dye was initially mixed with the appropriate amount of zeolite / TiO2 mixture in a defined ratio. The aqueous solution was stirred for 40 minutes in the dark to achieve the adsorption - desorption equilibrium. Subsequently, it was irradiated for 40 minutes with an a lamp emitting in the UV-Vis range and the photocatalytic decoloration was quantified by UV-VIS spectrophotometry. It was found that the decoloration rate reached ~ 100% for the experiments with the commercially available Degussa, while was found lower for the experiments with the titania but was significantly enhanced when combined with the zeolite.
