Abstract

This Master Thesis examines the resistance to mechanization in the early 20th century Greece. Occupations like coachmen - carters and tobacco rollers were the main actors of the demonstrations that took place against "technological unemployment". Firstly, Ι will try to examine their collective action, the repertoires and the "discourses" that were used by them. Secondly, Ι am interested in the impact of their mobilization οη the formation of state policy. During the Greek Interwar era, many «traditional» trades received compensation for their replacement by the machines. This severance policy (as a counterweight to disposition by technology), seems to be an idiom of the Greek state policy, rather than an international rule. It is closely connected to the preceded collective action against mechanization as well as to some perceptions for the introduction of technological ,progress>, which were debated in the Greek Parliament from 1907 onwards.
