Abstract Background: Chronic renal failure (CKD) is one of the most widespread diseases of the modern era with high rates of morbidity and mortality. The replacement therapy hemodialysis is the most common treatment modality in end-stage CKD. Chronic Kidney Disease can have serious effects on patients' quality of life and in particular on their physical, social and psychological well-being. Therefore, assessing the quality of life in chronic patients is a priority for health scientists and the global research community. Objective: The main purpose of the present study is to investigate the quality of life of patients with CKD undergoing renal function replacement therapy with hemodialysis. Secondary objectives are to correlate quality of life with demographic characteristics and clinical laboratory characteristics of disease severity. Also, the correlation of the quality of life with the duration of hemodialysis, the need for chronic analgesic treatment, waiting on the transplant list and any previous kidney transplant. Methods: This is a prospective cohort study with a sample of 199 hemodialysis patients of the artificial kidney units of the prefecture of Heraklion during the period June-December. For the needs of the research, a self-completed patient demographic and clinical information form was used. This is a prospective cohort study with a sample of 199 hemodialysis patients of the artificial kidney units of the prefecture of Heraklion during the period June-December. For the needs of the research, a self-completed patient demographic and clinical information form was used. Results: 199 patients on hemodialysis participated. Men were 68.8%, women 31.2%, the average age was 65.8±13.5 years, the average length of time in hemodialysis was 6.9±6.6 years and the average distance of the artificial kidney units from the place of residence was 26.2±20.5 km. The most common cause of kidney disease was diabetes nephropathy (22.6%). Part A of the KDQOL-SFTM concerned quality of health indicators and ranged from 48.05% ±46.7 to 71.4% ±22.6. In general, a drop in the Quality of Health was found on average over 40%. The more years of hemodialysis the kidney patients had, the lower the General Health Index (p=0.029). Part B of the KDQOL-SFTM concerned quality indicators of the effects of kidney disease on daily life and ranged from 46.8% ±29.8 to 90.4% ±18.4. The effects of CKD on daily life differed according to marital status, with widows having worse results in their daily (p=0.010) and sexual life (p=0.011). Hemodialysis patients' satisfaction with staff support was >90% and did not differ between private and public facilities. Conclusion: The complexity and treatment of CKD negatively affect Quality of Life indicators of General and Physical Health. Age, marital status, duration of hemodialysis, use of analgesics were important factors that affected the quality of life. The initial cause of kidney disease was not significantly associated with any quality of life index of hemodialysis patients relative to the kidney disease itself. The quality of life of the hemopurifiers was not related to the private or public nature of the artificial kidney units. In general, Satisfaction with the health care provided and the support of health professionals was found.
