Abstract |
The eye is a complex system in the human body and may be considered an excellent visual system for its function. Still, there are many cases where this perfection is disturbed by failures in the structure of the eye or by some pathologies. Such a pathology is keratoconus, in which the cornea of the eye begins to deform and create some areas which impair its refractive capacity and consequently the visual acuity of the eye. There are several methods to treat this condition. One of them is the implantation of intraocular lenses. The purposes of this project is to investigate by simulation whether a double spherical cylindrical intraocular lens can correct adequately part of the optical aberrations and refractive errors caused by keratoconus. To accomplish this, an adaptive optics optical system with two adaptive magnetic mirrors was set up to simulate keratoconic patietns and the proposed intraocular lens. Analysis of the capabilities of the Hartman – Shack wavefront sensor and dynamic range of the mirrors was performed by using simulations from a database of 97 keratoconic patients. Subsequently, Zernike coefficients of the optical aberrations of 3 keratoconic patients were used to calculate the Zernike coefficients of the optical design of the proposed intraocular lens. Both sets of Zernike coefficients were then used to drive the first magnetic mirror for simulating the keratconic patient and the second magnetic mirror to drive the correction based on the proposed intraocular lens. The final optical aberrations of the simulation were calculated by acquiring images with the Hartman-Shack wavefront sensor to estimate the correction capacity of the proposed intraocular lens.
