Abstract The thesis consists of three sections A, B and C. In the section A the magnetic and transport properties of magnetite Fe3O4 thin films are studied, and the effect of growth conditions and substrate material on those properties is investigated. In the section B a detailed study on the thermoelectric properties of La1-xSrxCoO3 solid solution is given. Several polycrystalline samples and thin films of different stoichiometries are measured and a clear picture of the thermoelectric efficiency of this transition metal oxide is given. In the section C the application of a simple theoretical model to planar thermoelectric structures is proposed and the thermoelectric power factor of this structure is studied. Finally in appendices there are information about the experimental set-ups used for low temperature measurements, employed in this thesis. Every section consists of four or five chapters. The author tried to write each of these chapters as an independent report, in order to be read separately, if it is needed.
