Abstract The subject of this thesis is the lawless loves of married women in archaic and classical poetry. This unconventional love itself is a common theme in literary tradition and it has become widely acknowledged as the “pattern of Potiphar's Wife,” as in all cases the hero rejects the woman’s romantic advances and she, in turn, accuses him of rape. The focus of this research lies in the stories of Bellerophon and Anteia (Iliad rhapsody Z’), of Peleas and Hippolyte (5th and 4th Nemeonikos by Pindarus), of Hippolytos and Phaedra (Veiled Hippolytus, Hippolytus Stephanias or Stephanephoros, Euripides), as well as the story of Bellerophon and Stheneboia (Stheneboia, Euripides). Interestingly, Euripides does not depict the heroines mentioned above as predatory, in contrast to earlier literature, but instead he characterizes them as heroines of «του πάσχειν», as victims of the overpowering might of Eros and Aphrodite. Despite the negative perception surrounding them, both during and after the 5th century BCE, these women managed to obtain characteristics worthy of commemoration.
