Abstract

The pandemic in Greece in the early 2020 brought many changes in the lives of the adolescents, who are already considered as a vulnerable age group in terms of internet addiction issues, because of biological, psychological and social factors. That creates the circumstances for internet addiction, internalizing and externalizing problems.In the present study the frequency of internet addiction in adolescents is assessed and the correlation between internet addiction and externalizing and internalizing problems is explored. The hypotheses tested are that internet addiction will be positively correlated with internalizing and externalizing problems, that internalizing and externalizing problems will be predicted by the internet addiction and that the adolescent's sex, parent's age, school performance, and social media use are going to act as mediating variables. The sample consists of 154 adolescent's parents thirteenn to seventeen years old from Crete. The Greek versions of the Internet Addiction Test (Internet Addiction Test, Young, 1998) for the internet addiction and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, Goodman,1997; Μπίμπου-Νάκου, Κιοσέογλου & Στογιαννίδου, 2001) for the internalizing and externalizing problems were used. A form for social and demographic information was also used. Most of the hypotheses listed above are confirmed. Internet addiction is positively correlated with internalizing and externalizing problems. Internalizing and externalizing problems are predicted by the internet addiction. Generally the results of the present stydy are in agreement with the already existent studies.
