Abstract Working life of teachers generally includes several stressful factors and the development of their resilience can act protectively against the daily challenges they have to face. Student behavior problems have emerged as the most common challenge that increases teachers' stress and threatens their resilience. The present research evaluates general and special education teachers' knowledge of basic behavioral principles and behavior modification, their levels of stress and resilience, and also explores possible relationships between them. The sample consists of 114 general and special education teachers and the tools used to collect the data are a) the "Knowledge of Behavioral Principles as Applied to Children" test, b) the "Scale of Protective Factors of Teachers' Resilience" and c) the "Teacher Stress Rating Scale". The results of the survey showed low levels of knowledge in behavioral principles and behavior modification, moderate to high levels of resilience and moderate levels of stress. Teachers' knowledge did not appear to be related to their resilience and stress. Regarding the relationship between resilience and stress, it emerged that the factors of values/beliefs and the legislative framework are associated with reduced levels of stress. Instead, surprisingly, physical well-being as well as emotional and behavioral competence were found to be associated with increased levels of stress. On the other hand, regarding the factors of relationships with people inside and outside the school context, no statistically significant relationship with stress was found. Although no statistically significant relationship was found between teachers' behavioral knowledge and their stress and resilience, the low levels of knowledge observed highlight the need for upgrading the undergraduate coursework programs of the relevant university departments, the continuous specialized education and training of teachers, as well as their support from school psychologists or other specialized personnel in behavior analysis. Also, although resilience of teachers ranges from moderate to high levels, special education teachers seem to be more vulnerable possibly due to difficulties they face in teaching and their professional development. The increase in stress observed in recent years among Greek teachers can be countered by the development of resilience derived from values/beliefs and legislative framework, while according to teachers themselves improving working conditions, increasing salaries and limiting substitute teachers can also significantly reduce their stress.
