Abstract Change today occurs at a very fast pace. New economies are based on knowledge. The traditional forms of education are no longer sufficient to address the needs of modern economy, which are gradually updated by adopting innovative educational methods. Nowadays distance learning almost requires the use of e-learning because of the possibilities it offers.**Furthermore, it is possible to conduct a course combining traditional learning with e-learning.**One of the most important aspects of e-learning is considered to be the existence of processes which facilitate and increase the interaction between tutor and student.**The quality of communication is critical both for the educational process as well as for the success of the students’ studies. At the current master thesiswe developed a system which is used as an intermediate step in the communication between tutor and student to automate the process of answering the student’s questions that uses techniques on textual case based reasoning, and which benefits both the tutor and the student. The automation of this process significantly decreases the work load and involvement required by the tutor, whereas for the students it minimizes the time required to receive an answer. The system is based on the use of preexisting knowledge to answer questions asked by the students. For each new question, the system checks if there is knowledge stored for it by checking previous similar cases, which have been answered by the tutor in the past. If the system finds preexisting knowledge which can answer the question, it sends it to the student without requiring any action by the tutor. On the other hand, if no relevant information is found, the question will be answered by the tutor and it will be stored in the system, so similar questions can be automatically answered in the future. The system can be used for teaching courses in all subject fields.
