Abstract The purpose of this study is to raise student’s awareness of the social dimensions of the body and more specifically regarding the aspects related to the body and identity, the body and origin, the body and social class, the body and gender, the body and religion. For this reason, art-based activities were carried out for eighteen fourth-grade students of a Primary school in Rethymnon. Through theater, theatrical techniques, dramatization, theatrical play, role-playing, improvisation, through painting, sculpture, photography and visual representations, through literature and poetry, through music and movement, the children watched, got involved and experienced the social course of the body. Action research was utilized as a qualitative methodology and alternative research approach and as the fruitful means where art can be used as a tool for a more experiential approach involving students actively and pleasantly in the process, while pushing to understand a reality through the process. Initially, it was considered necessary to operate as a first cycle of the research practice an early stage focused on the awareness of the body, to lead to the social dimensions of the body and the main part consisting of six interventions. Students were interviewed to check their perceptions, as well as creating self-portraits as a supplementary check before and after the interventions. The results were qualitatively analyzed and showed that the students through the theater and with the partnership of the arts improved in terms of their perceptions. They were initially mobilized, engaged in the process of thinking and observing, and advanced understandings of the body in an experiential way. Their ideas were enriched, some were expressed in a more analytical way in contrast to the initial stage, some were differentiated and it seems that the interventions had a positive effect and the students became aware. The present action research could be continued by addressing other research questions or carried out by focusing on a more specific and limited field, highlighting only one specific aspect under investigation.
