Abstract Accidents are the main cause of child mortality and the second cause of childhood morbidity and visits to the doctor after acute infections. The school environment is often a source of accidents. The problem is intensified in special schools, where the child cannot respond generally to the instructor's instructions due to (reduced critical ability, inability to co-ordinate movements, child's disease itself ) that make it prone to accidents. The purpose of this study was to record teachers' opinions and attitudes regarding the risk factors that lead to the accidents of special school students. The survey is a cross-sectional observation study that took place in the district of Chania. A questionnaire with 17 closed and open-ended questions by Panagaki P. and Gelastopoulou E. was obtained for the collection of the data, which was licensed by the researchers. 72 teachers of Special Primary Education, Special Educational Staff, as well as Special Assistants of the four Special Primary Schools of the Prefecture of Chania were asked. Statistical verification was performed with IBM SPSS Statistics 24.0. The main conclusions were: (a) a significant number of accidents happens at schools, more frequently resulting in scratches and bruises. (b) Places where accidents more frequently happen are school yard and corridors. (c) Children’s hurry is the main factor for accidents to happen. (d) Conflicts with other children often end up in a child's fall. (e) It is necessary to set up and follow-up accident prevention seminars in schools. (f) The key to reduce falls and accidents in the school environment is the inclusion of a course at the existing school curriculum program. (g) The supervision and adequacy of teaching staff is the most important factor in reducing accidents at school. The presence of nursing staff is essential. (h) Safety of both the outer and inner spaces of the school and the removal of dangerous objects (sharp, small objects) and dangerous substances inside and outside the classroom are also important.
