Abstract |
The master’s thesis aims to approach the question of anti-Semitism through the view
some of the thinkers of Frankfurt School. For this purpose, we decided to write the
text in the basis of two “pylons”. With the first we make reference to an “early”
economical explanation for anti-Semitism, which is written by Horkheimer in 1939
(“Jews and Europe”), where Jews are presented as representatives of the field of
circulation in the liberal capitalism. In this work, Horkheimer is based in Pollock’s
economical theory for state capitalism, and, because of this, we have a separate
chapter about this theory and about the theory of corporatism too, as it is presented in
“Authoritarian State”. The second “pylon” is about a “post” explanation of the anti-
Semitism, which Horkheimer and Adorno give in the last chapter of Dialectic of
Enlightenment in 1944, where they show a more complete explanation of the
phenomenon, as, apart from the economical reasons for the chase against Jews, they
present physiological and cultural reasons too. Jews represent the imitation and the
return in previous cultural stages, where the individual used to be in harmony with the
nature. The change of the argument in this explanation has to do with the fact that in
1944 the terrible consequences of the war were obvious, in contrast with 1939.
Consequently, we are concerned on how Jews are at the same time representatives of
nature and of circulation? From this point of view, does the work of 1944 complete
that of 1939 or is it a new approach of this complicated question? As we will show
and in our opinion, the two works are mutually linked.
