Abstract

The main purpose of this paper is to highlight the issue of marriage and more specifically the basic aspects of the social life in ottoman Candia during the period between 1669 and 1689. In order to achieve this goal, I used the -409- marriage contracts which exist in the ottoman juridical codes (no 2, 3, 4 and 5), which today consist a part of the Turkish Archive of “ Vikelaia” Library of Heraklion . The detailed analysis of these contracts is very helpful in understanding better the various perspectives of the new social, military and religious life of ottoman Candia and generally of ottoman Crete.
