Abstract	This case study presents preliminary conclusions on the historiographical issue of the islamic institution of Pious Foundations, better known as Waqf, based on the example of Thessaloniki immediately after the ottoman conquest until the suleymanic era. Byzantine and ottoman sources were scrutinized in order to identify and verify the number of pious foundations of the city highlighting unknown aspects of urban economic and social functions. The foundation of waqfs by ottoman state as well as by local elite shaped tremendously the complex process of urban transformation.
