Abstract |
Planktonic protists exhibit a variety of nutritional strategies, including mixotrophy. Mixotrophy is a broad spectrum or combination between autotrophy and heterotrophy. Many phytoplankton species, including toxic bloom-‐forming algae, are primarily photosynthetic organisms with phagotrophic capabilities (type II mixotrophs). Harmful algal blooms (HABs) have major negative impacts on both marine ecosystems and local economies. The present study describes a mechanistic and physiological model of the type II mixotrophs and aims to predict their population dynamics under various environmental conditions. The modeling of physiological and metabolic processes is based on dynamic energy budget theory (DEB) and synthesizing units (SUs). It uses ecological data to construct the three main strategies of type II mixotrophs and ecophysiological data for toxic behaviour. Moreover, the three nutritional strategies are simulated in a chemostat under different dynamic conditions including different ratios of supplied inorganic nutrients such as N and P, axenic and non-‐axenic conditions, absence of organic growth factors and different light regimes. Overall, the quantification of the growth rate, the rate of the various substrates consumption and the changes in the toxin production rate results in the prediction of the population dynamic of many harmful algae under different environmental conditions.
