Abstract This thesis focuses on the ethical considerations that arise from childhood immunizations. We mention the basic meaning of public health, vaccinations and we develop extensively the arguments of the anti-vaccination movements which are the basic reaction “voice” for the vaccines. In the debate we also discuss about the free-riding problem which tends to receive increasing rates in vaccinations. The center of our thesis consists of the following questions. Is it ethical correct for the parent to delay or refuse his child’s vaccination? This attitude may involve any danger for the child’s health or the public health? Is there a balance between the personal choice and the protection of the population health? Is it useful to impose mandatory vaccination in case of outbreak and who is going to decide for the vaccination? Through the analysis of the current bibliography and the moral theories becomes obvious that childhood immunizations are an issue of collective action which requires resolution and participation by everyone. The vaccination refusal as a health behavior can pose a risk to both the individual and the society as a whole. In cases of endemic outbreaks, health policy aims to maintain the health of the population. Parents, if there are no serious reasons (health, religious, ideological), must follow the instructions of the authorities about vaccination. The dilemma of respecting the parents' autonomy over the protection of public health is not easy. Freedom of choice should not be interpreted in a purely individualistic context. Instead, every person has to act as a member of the community.
