Abstract Introduction: The crime of homicide is a primitive violence crime and is among the crimes against life. Internationally it is considered as the most important crime of penal code since the victim is deprived of his legal right of life. It is distinguished between negligent homicide and willful murder according to the degree of fault of the offender. Furthermore, it is a measurable monitoring indicator of violent deaths in a social context contributing to the recording of geographical or national features and their association with the course of criminality in important historical times. Purpose: This study is focused on the recording of the total number of homicides in Crete over the period 1987-2021 per year and decade and thereafter the comparison of the statistics that will arise with those of the rest of Greece. Crete is a geographically limited area in Greece, with great numbers of tourists, special cultural features but at the same time it has a strategic position for the admission of immigrants. Therefore, this makes Crete ideal for this study. In the context of this study an analysis of demographic characteristics of the victims of homicides in Crete takes place as well as the recording of possible profile changes and investigation of factors responsible for all this. Finally, there will be an analysis of the means/types of homicides (e.g. firearm, sharp, blunt objects, strangulation etc.) and interpretation of the results. Ultimately there will be extraction of statistic evidence for the promotion of the size of the problem in the region of Crete so at to find ways to hinder the phenomenon in the future. Methology: For this study authorization was obtained in order to have access to files of the Forensics Service of Crete as well as the Hospital Unit of Forensics of the University Hospital in Heraklion and thus cover the total number of homicides in Crete over the period 1987-2021. The requested data for the study was taken from forensics reports, police permission and toxicology tests. Demographics for the victim and the offender was collected, information concerning the relationship between the victim and the offender, the number of offenders, the prefecture, the exact place, the month and the year the crimes took place as well as their motives. Finally, the type of means, the distance and the number of hits, the anatomical position of wound and the exact cause of death was recorded. Moreover, it was recorded whether there was a psychopathology background or whether there had been a struggle before the incident or an attempt to hide the body and suicide attempt by the offender. This data underwent statistics processing and the absolute frequencies for the description of qualitative variables were calculated as well as the relative rates, while the x2 test method was used for the correlation of no-parametric variables. The ratio of homicides per 100.000 inhabitants and per year was calculated. The formal population census (1981, 1991, 2011, 2018) was taken into account and a linear interpolation was used to have the changes in rates per year before the ratio was calculated. Result: 388 homicides were recorded and they took place in the region of Crete. 236 (69,82%) of the victims were males and 102 (30,18% ) were females. As for the age distribution of the victims of the homicides the greatest proportion is the age group 18-30 (21,96%) and 31-40 (20,77%). The means of death is very often some kind of gun that is to say 48,22% in the total number of incidents followed by stab wounds and cutting wounds 20,12%,the most common location of hit was the head 57,4% and the chest 53,8% while almost half the number of homicides was shot at point blank. As it is obvious in most cases the victim knew the attacker. Most homicides occurred in spring time, without the presence of statistically important differences in the frequency depending on the time of the year. From the information collected it turns out that a higher percentage of offenders is very often males in the age group 18-30. As for the female offenders the highest percentage is in the age group 41-50. What is more the motive in crime and the scene of the crime seem to differ according to the gender of the victim. The females are very often victimized within their homes while the males in some outdoor locations. The motive of the offender is related to arguments between the people involves when the victim is male. When the victim is female, the motive is the sexual satisfaction of the offender. Finally, there is an important statistics relation of the means used and the age of the victim as well as his nationality. Conclusion: The majority of the homicides (150) are recorded in the prefecture of Heraklion which is most probably attributed to its dominance in terms of population. Generally speaking the findings of the study regard the profile of the victim and the offender and they prove that they are in agreement with the literature. Calculating the homicides ratio per 100.000 inhabitants and per decade on the island there is a decreasing tendency over the years. Σhe higher absolute figure of homicides has been placed in time in 2008 and it could be attributed to the economic crisis in our country. The motive and the findings of the toxicology tests require further investigation due to absence of numerous evidence from the forensic files regarding the offenders.
