Abstract |
Background
In late 2019, in Wuhan, Hubei Province in China, a series of pneumonic cases appeared which were attributed to a new coronavirus strain named SARS-CoV-2. Governments have taken several restrictive measures to limit the transmission of COVID-19. The workplaces hit hardest by the pandemic are hospitals and especially ICUs.
Objective
The main objective of this study was to examine the ICU visits of a tertiary hospital in Greece during the COVID-19 pandemic and to compare the emergency admissions of two periods, from March 2019 to February 2020 and from March 2020 to February 2021.
Methods
The feasibility sampling method was used for data collection. All admissions performed between March 2019 to February 2020 were compared with March 2020 to February 2021. Clinics that displayed increases or decreases in their admissions were further analyzed.
Results
We identified a significant difference in ED visits and emergency admissions between the two time periods. There was a decrease in ED visits by 41% and a decrease in admissions by 22%. Only a few clinics had increases in their admissions, while most clinics had decreased admissions. These decreases reached 50% in Pediatrics and General Surgery. Admissions related to specific diagnoses like cerebrovascular diseases showed significant increases. In contrast, autoimmune diseases that can be exacerbated by poor phychological state like Crohn's disease and bullous pemphigoid displayed substantial increases. Conclusion
The research showed that the pandemic greatly affected the hospitals, as the visits to the emergency rooms and the admissions to the clinics decreased. The public and health concerns about the new virus, combined with the ignorance of the new virus, have had similar effects.
