Abstract Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are a relatively new class of porous materials that consists of inorganic nodes (metals or clusters) bridged by polytopic organic linkers (mostly carboxylates), forming coordination bonds. Altering the nature of the inorganic node or the geometry of the organic linker, it is possible to design materials with different topologies. This tunable nature of MOFs makes them suitable candidates in various key applications such as gas storage/separation, catalysis and drug release. The main purpose of this work is the synthesis and characterization of functionalized MOFs, with polar groups such as -NO2, -SO3H, -NH- and their effect on gas sorption properties. The functionalized IRMOF-8 with sulfonic groups was successfully synthesized and structurally characterized and its gas-sorption properties were studied. Also with the use of the same organic linker, a series of rare-earth MOFs (RE-MOFs) with the fcu topology were synthesized. The Y-fcu analogue was functionalized with Ag+ cations, and the selectivity of propane/propene was evaluated. Furthermore, three novel mesoporous MOFs were synthesized, using two different linkers with different geometries. These mesoporous MOFs were activated using supercritical CO2 and their porosity was evaluated. With the use of a tetragonal linker, two MOFs were synthesized with the rare topologies she and csq. The she topology was obtained with the use of the 6-connected Hf6 cluster, [Hf63-Ο)43-ΟΗ)4(CH3COO)1(HCOO)52Ο)6(COO)6] and the 4-connected tetragonal linker. The Hf-she-MOF was successfully activated and its gas sorption properties were evaluated at low and high pressures. The Y-csq-MOF was obtained with the use of the same linker and an 8-connected Y4 cluster [Υ43-Ο)2(COO)5].
