Abstract The present thesis deals with the problem of the construction of a diagnostic support system in engineering applications. The requirements for the specific system are obtained from a carmanufacturing company. The Diagnostic Support System was developed in order to assist the diagnostic process in engineering applications and more specifically in machine manufacturing so as to satisfy the requirements set by the carmanufacturing company. The main purpose of the Diagnostic Support System is the documentation of faults, in particular of systematic faults, which can be effectively used in the diagnostic process. The information in the Diagnostic Support System consists of structured descriptions organized in a knowledge base according to an object-orineted semantic model, implemented in the Telos knowledge representation language. The Diagnostic Support System includes a Fault Manipulation Model where the necessary knowledge for the diagnostic process is represented. The concepts of fault, cause, symptom, phenomenon, condition, solution and their interrelationships are presented within the Fault Manipulation Model. The concepts of product, machine, operational and structural component of an engineering device have also been represented. Finally, the concepts of actor and action are represented. A vocabulary of condition, phenomenon, fault and cause terms is embedded within the Fault Manipulation Model to allow the classification of new descriptions and the effective retrieval of information. The existence of the specific vocabulary, minimizes the effort of discovering the appropriate term to index new descriptions and the problem of inconsistency in such indexing. The information has been represented in a way that, despite its heterogeneity, its reuse is enabled in different contexts and for different purposes. The operational kernel of the Diagnostic Support System is the Semantic Index System (SIS), developed at the Institute of Computer Science, Foundation of Research and Technology-Hellas.
