Abstract Subtital hard bottoms are of particular scientific and economical value since they are characterized as highly productive systems. To date, much fewer studies focus on the investigation of hard substrate ecosystems than those on the soft ones because of the absence of standardized sampling methods and the need of using SCUBA diving techniques. In the present study, three hard bottom sampling methods were compared, regarding their catching efficiency and the damages they may cause to meiobenthic and macrobenthic organisms. While the two sampling methods are typically used for the study of hard bottom substrates (scraping, suction devices), the third has been carried out with a newly introduced sampler (MANOSS - Manual Operated Suction Sampler) which was constructed in the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR). All three sampling methods were tested in Alykes (N. Crete) which is characterized as a continuous hard bottom habitat from the intertidal down to the 20 meters. According to our results, significant differences were observed between the catching efficiency and the damages caused by the three sampling methods. Furthermore, greater differences were observed in the catching performance in the meiobenthic assemblages using MANOSS rather than the other sampling methods. Concerning the damage levels, few damages were caused to the organisms by the use of the different samplers. Finally, the body length seems to be an indicative measure of the damage levels, caused by the samplers.
