Abstract In this thesis, an automated optical profilometer is presented. The profilometer is using the white light interferometry for the recording of the surfaces profile. For the achievement of the objective, a Michelson interferometer was manufactured as well as the control automation was build using the graphic programming environment of Labview. Initially the theory of light interferometry is presented, with emphasis in the partially coherent lighting sources. Then two basic interferometers that were used are presented, the Michelson interferometer and the Mirau interferometer and the problems that existed in their use. Then, the automation process for the interferograms recording by using a CCD camera is presented. The recorded interferograms are analyzed using a second automation so that the extraction of the profile of a surface from the interferograms is possible. Finally, a set of some characteristic results from the samples that were examined are presented, as well as the conclusions were extracted.
