Abstract This master thesis consists of six chapters. In the first chapter we refer briefly to the history of series through existing written documents. The research leads us to Egypt of about 1650 B.C., where the prime form of known series is the arithmetic and geometric progression. We, then, study related documents coming from Mesopotamia, China, India, Arabia and, finally, Ancient Greece and we conclude our historical research in Europe between the 12th and 19th century. In the second chapter we describe two methods of evaluating the sum of an infinite series: the telescopic method and the method of differences. In the next three chapters we deal with the harmonic series, the series ζ (2) and the finite sums Sk(n).
