Abstract

In the present thesis, the synthesis of biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) by ring opening polymerization of (D-L) lactide was studied in the context of developing a food waste recovery method. Furthermore, we studied and tried to optimize the most important step of the process, which is polymerization, by studying parameters such as temperature, initiator, and humidity in order to produce high molecular weight PLA. The products were characterized by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR).
