Abstract In knowledge bases we often encounter complex relationships among the objects. For their presentation to the user, tables, such as those used for the relational data model, are not suitable. General graphs emerge as a more natural and effective form of presentation. In the present work, we define a methodology for the exploration of semantic network data bases. We identity the methods that can be used in browsing a semantic-network data base, and we organize them in a functional context, so than the user easily perceives the whole process in an intuitive way. We identify four layers of funcrtionality: The first deals with query execution, the second with the automatic layout of the graph, the third with using the semantic and topological information in the graph, and the fourth with graph visualization and user interface issues. Finally, we develop the Semantic Browser System, which implements our methodology.
