Abstract |
Emotions have been widely recognized as influencing factors in the teaching and
learning of mathematics. Nevertheless, emotions have been little studied in the
context of Distance Education (DE) and more specifically in an online learning
environment, which was adopted overnight by the institutions of any educational
level in the country with the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of
this study is to investigate the relationship between the emotional states
experienced by undergraduates in the university online course ‘Introduction to
Linear Algebra’ and the characteristics of the online environment in which
undergraduates act. This study was carried out in the light of the “Theory of
Transactional Distance”, one of the most well-recognized theories in the DE. In
summary, the results of the study are basically consistent with the relevant existing
literature, as they show that the high student-perceived interaction in the course has
a positive correlation with positive emotional states they experience and a negative
correlation with negative emotional states they experience, respectively.
