Abstract |
Precarity in the field of work is a multidimensional concept, which is mainly related to unfavorable working conditions, the threat of unemployment and the difficulty of finding a new job. As demonstrated by the bibliographic review carried out for this research, the area of retail trade and especially, the experiences of its employees, is an issue that has not been extensively studied by the social sciences. Therefore, from the personal experiences of these individuals, we will try to investigate the conditions that turn workers in precarious working conditions and the management strategies they use to cope with them. For the study of the specific topic, the Qualitative approach was chosen as the most appropriate methodological approach, through the conduct of a total of five interviews with people who work in a retail business. From the processing of the interviews, it emerged that the working conditions directly place them in a precarious context through the daily and multifactorial insecurity they experience. It was also shown that the status or type of contract that each employee can have, does not give significant differences in the quality of their working conditions, as the experiences of insecurity remain common. An important factor that burdens these conditions are the relationships that develop both between the staff and between the staff and the management company. The relations between them are characterized by the employees themselves as extremely competitive - a fact due to the different "types" of contracts but also to the company's constant pressure to increase sales-while the relations with the company's management are characterized as "non-existent”. The limitation of personal life, physical burdens and lives based around the business, are some of the issues highlighted and highlight the influence of precariousness in the daily life of workers. In addition to what the interviewees said, the reasons for accepting these precarious conditions are presented, such as age, the wrong choice of career path and the threat of unemployment. Finally, the ways-strategies of management used by the workers in the retail sector in relation to their working conditions were categorized.
