Abstract |
This dissertation aims to explore the basic theory of the French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan on the formation of the social subject, as well as to give prominence to its importance for sociopolitical analysis. Jacques Lacan repositioned psychoanalytic thought as the focal point of critical theory. His theoretical tools aren’t targeted only to the therapeutic context· they have been proven useful for fields such as social and political theory. This is possible because Lacan achieved a radical review of the classical Freudian psychanalytical theory in the light of saussurean structuralism and of other theories such as the Hegelian master-slave. Therefore, he delivers an «organized attack» towards the Cartesian modern subject and structures a new theory of subjectivity. The first part of my attempt focuses on the three orders (or registers) that comprise the fundamental concepts behind the formation of the social subject and birth of unconscious: the imaginary, the symbolic and the real. The basis of imaginary is characterized by the formation of the ego through the «mirror stage». Since the ego is formed by identifying with the counterpart of the specular image, identification is an important concept of the imaginary order. The symbolic order is the place where the unconscious is born and structured as language. J.Lacan uses here the concepts of the sausserean sign, the relations between signifier and signified and explains how the meaning does not simply appear spontaneously but is the product of these relations in language. Finally, the third order, the real, is situated beyond symbolic and represent the «lost object» and the unity, which the subject misses after his introduction to the symbolic order. In the second part, my focus turns to the usage of the lacanian tools to social and political theory. More specifically, my attempt is a demarcation of the political in relation to the political reality. I’m using part of S.Zizek, E. Laclau & L. Zac, Lipovats and J.Stavrakakis’ theories. In addition, I present some of the most important critics that have been made towards lacanian theory, as wells as to its implications in the implementation on the field of the sociopolitical analysis.
