Abstract This research is an effort to understand the experiences of women with breast cancer, who are active as volunteers in peer support programs. This qualitative study is an inquiry into how the experience of breast cancer relates to the women’s decision to train as volunteers and to offer support to women with the same diagnosis. The ten women, who participated in this study, provided semi-structured interviews which were analyzed according to Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis methodology. The four main themes that emerged from the analysis are: « “I feel health. How can I die?” the disease as an incision to the biographical continuoum», «wounded body: live memories», « “when you close the door” human relationships after cancer», and «volunteering as an antidote to rupture». The above themes concern respectively: Cancer diagnosis as a biographical disruption, the way relationships with relatives were affected by the disease, the long-suffering body, and the decision to be a volunteer. What was concluded from the women’s narratives is that volunteering seems to work as an antidote to disruption and the changes brought about by breast cancer.
