Abstract Given the volume as well as the semantic diversity of the terms aThesaurushas to deal with, it is possible that these factors refrain the userfrom aqualitative query and effective information retrieval. Semantichierarchies, being a relatively secure method of data organization, permit amultilevellexical structure, using guide-terms as the conceptual level that termscomeunder and specialize according to their qualitative features allowingthedistinction between the use of their corresponding terms. Technical domains like Architecture dispose complex terminology withdynamiccombinations able to generate new concepts. The problem is that a userof astatic thesaurus, cannot easily execute queries if Thesaurus terms donotdemonstrate a proper structure which could inherently allow the dynamiccombination, the co-compositionality, for the generation of new termsbasedon given ones, in any novel context. It is a matter of expressioneconomyplus a matter of identification between query and indexing the urge foraunique and co-compositional indexing language, which will lead to thevocabulary increase of the architectural indexing. This study proposes a theory for the organization, structure andrepresentation of the concepts in regards with the Objects Facet of theArts& Architecture Thesaurus (AAT). What we are mainly interested in, is theissue of lexical meaning representation, within the scope of resolvingtheproblem of a dynamic method in describing Thesaurus terms, offeringtransformational rules for a generative formation of new terms based onthegiven ones. Initial research involved the issue of Concept Formation and Representation as confronted within the fields of Philosophy and Cognitive Psychology. We then examined the efficiency of an early Linguisticssemanticmodel, the Sense Enumeration Lexicons οne, which had to be abandoned duetoits lack of descriptive and representational power. We ended up usingComputational Linguistics and specifically the Generative Lexicon (GL)Theory, as the means for solving the problem of dynamic representationandgeneration of Thesaurus terms. Based on the GL theory, 1040 AATguide-termswere examined, both in respect to their predominant Qualia role (onepowerful tool of the theory) and the operators produced by this choice. We produced and formalized the syntactic rules which apply to the guidetermsand their operators, we identified the ontological category in whichtheirarguments belong to and we finally studied the frequencies thatoperatorshold in appearing in the Hierarchies of the Objects Facet. For theseguide-terms that the application of a Qualia role became unreachable(andsubsequently the creation and syntax of corresponding operators), we provided a grouping and a justification of the possible reasons thatmighthave lead to this conflict.
