Abstract This thesis examines the formation and development of the sculptor’s profession in Venetian Crete (13th- 17th centuries). As the sculptor’s work was interconnected with the quarrying and the building process, and in some cases, all those activities were undertaken by the same person, for that reason, the professions of the quarrier and the construction worker make also part of this research. The research is mostly based on the study of carved and sculpted artifacts produced in Crete during the Venetian era. The degree of the stone’s processing of these artefacts varies from simple ashlars to statues. Most of them constituted architectural elements. The meticulous analysis of these works/sculpted artefacts allowed us to reconstruct the operational chain of the sculpting process, from the provision of raw materials, to stone cutting, to curving the form, to integrating the architectural sculpture onto the building.Furthermore, the detailed investigation of this process led to ascertainments concerning the different networks of sculpture production that developed in Crete, as well as the organizing of the related professions of the quarrier, the sculptor and the construction worker. Finally, the link between stone sculpture production and wood sculpture production was examined.
