Abstract |
The present thesis aims to investigate the level of professional digital competence among Greek secondary education teachers and whether this level may be influenced by demographic factors (gender, age, education level, specialization, teaching experience, school structure, school location), utilizing the European framework for the digital competence of educators (DigCompEdu). To achieve this purpose, a quantitative, cross-sectional and sampling research was conducted, specifically employing a «self-administered» online questionnaire with the participation of 54 secondary education teachers. The research took place in September 2023, approximately three years after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and during a period of rapid technological advancements, with artificial intelligence leading the way. The findings of the research revealed a moderate level of digital competence among educators. Gender, age, specialization, school structures and the geographical areas where the schools were located were not found to significantly influence the digital competence level of teachers. On the contrary, education level and years of teaching experience seemed to have a small, albeit specific impact on certain aspects of digital competence. The overarching conclusion drawn is that there is a need for emphasis by those responsible for implementing European educational programs and ICT training to emphasize areas related to professional engagement (Area 1), digital resources (Area 2), and teaching and learning (Area 3). This emphasis aims to achieve an upgrate in the professional digital competencies of educators in these areas, contributing to the modernization of learning processes.
