Abstract |
The enormous progress made in recent years in the field of human genetics and
diagnostic techniques, created new conditions and possibilities for prenatal diagnosis.
In Greece prenatal testing is carried out systematically for the past thirty years, mainly to
detect single gene diseases such as β-thalassemia, thus effectively reducing the birth rate
of affected children. However, the possibilities offered by the prenatal tests raise a
number of ethical, social, political and legal dilemma, placing prenatal diagnostic
methods at the center of scientific debate. This thesis aims to explore and offer a new
perspective on the ethical and social issues raised by prenatal screening for β-thalassemia,
based on qualitative interviews of specialist health professionals in prenatal testing center
in Greece, thus contributing towards.
The theoretical part of the work centers on bioethical, social, political and legal issues
related to beta- thalassemia, such as, a) the debate concerning the rights of persons with
disabilities, b) the autonomy principle and informed consent, c) the issue of eugenics and
prenatal diagnosis, d) selective abortion, and e) the role of bioethics and genetic
counseling in prenatal examinations. Qualitative analysis is applied using in-depth
interviews with experts. According to the specialized personnel of a Greek prenatal
testing center a process of ‘ηθικοποίηση’ ‘ethicization’ is taking placing on the part of
those participating in the tests. This also reflects the limits of the special relationship
between the participants and the experts. Experts emphasize the issue of autonomy of the
individual and propose ethical criteria for the implementation of guidelines related to
prenatal diagnosis. They stress the important role of the state and its responsibility
concerning: a) the setting of guidelines on prenatal examinations, b) qualitative control of
all procedures for conducting diagnoses, c) the institutional recognition of specialized
professional in genetic counseling, d) informing the public, especially vulnerable groups
as well as, e) the organization and support of prevention programs.
