Abstract

In recent years, the existence of a competent educational administration and leadership in Greek educational institutions has become increasingly necessary. The constant change of contemporary society and the constant developments demand the existence of competent leadership in schools, which will leave behind the intense bureaucratic and administrative character and will turn to new and innovative ways of leadership, which will allow a reshaping of the school culture. Our research initially aims to demonstrate the differences between management and leadership through its theoretical part, what is school leadership and what are the characteristics of a leader, what are the leadership models that can be followed by a principal - school leader and research that have been held in Greece and abroad. Then follows the research part of the work in which it is investigated through three teachers' associations that were studied whether the principal of a public high school of Crete is a leader and after this has been verified, the leadership models he seems to follow and what is his position and the position of the teachers in the association that were studied. The results of the survey showed that the director of school has elements of a leader and that he does not follow a specific leadership model but he adopts elements from various models of leadership which have a common orientation. More specifically, he seems to adopt models that have characteristics such as collaboration and collective decision-making.
