Abstract The modern changing world, the rapid technological developments, the social changes taking place and globalisation could not leave the way education is provided unaffected. The role of the modern teacher and the teaching methods used has undergone significant changes in order to be able to meet the challenges and demands of modern societies. One of the modern teaching methods is that of co-teaching, which the subject of this paper is. This thesis aims to investigate the improvement of the co-teaching condition in secondary vocational schools in turn to increase students' interest and participation in the learning process. In order to achieve this, a qualitative research was conducted, specifically an action research, in which the spiral action research model of Kemmis & McTaggart (1988, cited in Katsarou, 2016) was implemented. Two research cycles were carried out, including one teaching intervention each. These interventions involved the collection, analysis, interpretation and evaluation of research data, which were then used to reflect upon the current situation. The findings of the research indicated a positive outcome in student engagement through the improvement and reconfiguration of co-teaching methods. The students were more involved in the educational process while the collaborative group work within the co-teaching model of instruction contributed to the development of social and cognitive skills of several students. Moreover the teacher researcher realised the potential of the improved method and recognised the benefits it has to offer .The advantages of this action research for all those involved in it and the research team's reflections were also highlighted.
