Abstract |
In Platos middle-period dialogues the hypothetical method features greatly. It is in fact an extension of the reductio ad absurdum that we find in his early works. The origin of this method lies with the geometrical method of analysis and synthesis. It was used by the mathematicians of Platos days and was among the factors that led to the of mathematics in the Academy. Plato introduces the hypothetical method as a philosophical tool in the Meno and develops it systematically in the Phaedo. In the former dialogue, we are asked to think in the same way as geometers do; in the later, the theory of forms is expounded through it The basic traits of the method are: demonstration by means of rational deduction from given premises, reduction of premises to more generic propositions, and investigation of the logical compatibility of propositions with the links and relations of ideas. By means of the hypothetical method we come to realize the indispensable role that language plays in our understanding of realitys essence. In the Republic Plato emphasizes the reduction of hypotheses to more generic hypotheses more intensely. His overall aim is the discovery of the most generic and interdisciplinary principles of the entire reality, and the final purpose that he postulates is ascension to the Good.
