Abstract |
Aim: Objective of this study was to investigate the total pharmaceutical treatment of
COPD patients in East Crete. Added to this, detection of potential drug interactions as
well as the type and the severity of their treatment were conducted.
Methods: 68 COPD patients were the sample size. The ascertaining of the disease was
made by spirometry in peripheral infirmaries and infirmaries of KAPI. Information
concerning their medication was gathered from the patient’s health booklets, and an
interview with the patient with a help of a health care professional resulted in
completion of a questionnaire. The overall treatment and its interactions were
recorded and detected through the completed questionnaires.
Results: The subjects involved in this study, were mainly administered with
respiratory, cardiovascular and gastrointestinal drug classes. 47% of the sample had at
least one interaction (13% pharmacodynamic, 21% pharmacokinetic, and 13%
combined parmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic), while the existence of interactions
seemed to be related more to the number of pharmaceuticals and the number of active
ingredients (p<0.0001 both), and to a lesser extent, by the physician’s specialty
prescribing the monthly treatment (p = 0.021). 41% of the sample presented clinically
significant interactions (moderate and severe). There was no relation between age and
interactions (95% CI for difference -3.2 to 4.8 years). The existence of clinically
significant interactions appeared to be related to the low economic status (p = 0.012),
alcohol consumption (p = 0.049), increased number of preparations as well as the
number of active substances (p <0.0001 both). In a multivariate analysis, obtained that
the odds of a clinically significant interaction with individual self-reported moderategood
economic status were 0.27 (95% CI 0.10 to 0.76) times the odds of a person with
COPD who considered themselves poor economic status.

Conclusion: This study reported a high rate of interactions and clinically significant
interactions in COPD patients, leading in further investigation.
